Different types of junkyards
Automobile salvage yards
-
US: nearly 11 million cars are recycled each year – enough to fill a 4 lane highway from NY to LA.
-
Junkyards dismantle and catalog each piece in order to remove everything that can be resold.
-
The auto salvage business is the 16th largest industry in the United States, with over $5 billion in annual sales.
Electronic junkyards
An old-school computer main frame is 20,000 square feet in volume. Computers in 1950s-60s were a treasure trove due to their gold connectors, silver wire insets, copper circuit boards, and most profitably, the circuit chips.
Aviation bone yard
-
Orville and Wilbur Wright may have been the first aviation salvagers – often using parts of one prototype to the other
-
WWI – (Curtis Company) first mass produced airplanes
-
WWII – greatest buildup of aircraft in American history
-
1940 – 1945 nearly 300,000 planes flew out of homeland factories
-
Postwar – planes found work in civilian world for converted trainers and crop dusters well into 1970s
-
1980s – forced out due to lawsuits
-
Today: used for Hollywood industry props and theme restaurants
